A friend and I were having a debate the other day regarding cross-state rivals. The particular topic in this conversation was the state of Pennsylvania. The basic gist of it was:
I said no. The cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are cross-state rivals; The Battle of Pennsylvania. Obviously you can’t vote for both, no matter what sport.
He argued that since they were two different sports, what does it matter if they are rival cities in the same state.
I just can’t manage to see it from this point of view, but perhaps I’m missing something?
But if that’s okay, then it would also be no big deal in relation to all other rivalries between cities in different states, right? Would you think someone had something wrong with their head if they professed themselves as both a Giants fan and Red Sox fan? Sure it’s two different sports, but doesn’t it still violate the Boston-New York rivalry? How about the Bay Area, can a (Sensible) person vote for the A’s in baseball and the Niners in the NFL? The way I see it, if this were the way this kind of thing was viewed by all fans, wouldn’t it result in rivalries just becoming obsolete? Chicago natives, for example, could then vote for both the Cubs and the White Sox. And all of the New York area fans as well. There would be Islanders and Rangers fans, etc.
And wouldn’t that be an awesome concept?
Anybody have an opinion on this?
